How to read your result
WPM (words per minute) is your correct characters divided by 5, divided by the minutes you typed. Five characters count as one word, so long and short words are treated fairly. Correct characters are the letters you typed in the right place, plus the space after each word you typed exactly right.
- 250 correct characters in a 60 second test is 50 WPM.
- 125 correct characters in a 30 second test is also 50 WPM.
Raw WPM uses the same sum but counts every character you typed, right or wrong. The gap between raw WPM and WPM shows how much your mistakes cost you.
Accuracy is the share of keys you pressed that were the expected character. Every letter and space counts once. A wrong key stays a mistake even if you fix it with backspace, so accuracy shows how cleanly you typed, not just the final text.
Mistakes is the number of wrong keys, including a space pressed too early or extra letters at the end of a word.
Your record is your highest WPM for each test length. It is saved only in this browser.
The words are picked at random from a list of about 300 everyday English words written for this site. Each test gives you a new set.
Troubleshooting
The timer didn’t start
Click or tap the typing field first. The timer starts with your first letter, not when the page opens.
My phone keyboard changes my words
The field asks keyboards not to autocorrect, but some keyboards do it anyway. Turn it off while you test.
- iPhone and iPad: Settings, then General, then Keyboard. Turn off Auto-Correction and Predictive Text.
- Android (Gboard): Settings, then System, then Languages and input, then On-screen keyboard, then Gboard, then Text correction. Turn off Auto-correction.
Can I go back and fix an earlier word?
No. Pressing space finishes a word. You can use backspace inside the word you are typing.
Pasting doesn’t work
That is on purpose. The test measures typing, so pasting and dropping text into the field are turned off.
My keyboard types the wrong letters
Your computer may be set to a different keyboard layout. On Windows, press the Windows key and Space to switch layouts. On a Mac, press Control and Space, or choose the layout from the input menu in the menu bar. The keyboard test shows what each key sends.
Should I pick 30 or 60 seconds?
Both use the same formula. A 60 second test gives a steadier number because one slow word matters less. The 30 second test is handy for a quick check.
