Fn and some shortcuts, like the Windows key or Ctrl+W, are handled by your computer first and may not show here.

How to read your result

Each key on the map shows its state with a colour and a mark, so you can read it without relying on colour.

Key looks like Meaning
Plain, no mark Not pressed yet.
Filled, with a dot Down right now.
Green, with a tick Pressed and released. The key works.
Amber, dashed edge, with “!” Down for over 2 seconds. If you are not holding it, the key may be stuck.

Keys tested counts the keys that worked out of the keys shown on the map. Narrow screens show the main keys. Wider screens add the arrow and navigation keys, and the widest add the number pad. Laptop keyboards have fewer keys, so they won’t reach the full count. That is normal.

Most at once is the largest number of keys your keyboard reported down at the same time. Hold several keys together, like the ones you use in a game. If a key you are holding does not turn blue, your keyboard cannot report that combination. This is called a rollover limit.

The large text shows what the key types on your layout. The small code shows which physical key it is. For example, on a French AZERTY keyboard the key that types A reports KeyQ, because it sits where Q is on a US keyboard.

Choose UK (ISO) if your keyboard has a tall Enter key and an extra key next to the left Shift. Otherwise keep US (ANSI).

While the test runs it catches every key, including Tab. To leave, hold Esc for 1 second, press Stop, or click outside the test area.

Troubleshooting

A key does not light up

  • Press it firmly in the middle. Crumbs or dust under a key can stop it from registering.
  • For a wireless keyboard, charge or replace the battery and move it closer to the receiver.
  • Try another USB port, or another computer, to tell a keyboard fault from a computer setting.
  • If the key works in other apps but not here, it may be one the computer handles first. See the next question.

Fn, the Windows key or some shortcuts never show up

  • Fn is handled inside the keyboard itself, so no website can see it.
  • Windows: the Windows key opens the Start menu, which pauses the test. It carries on when you come back to the page. Print Screen only shows when you release it.
  • Mac: shortcuts like Command+Tab and Command+Q go to macOS first. While Command is held, Mac browsers don’t report other keys being released, so test Command on its own.
  • Browser shortcuts like Ctrl+W or Ctrl+T can close or open tabs even during the test. Avoid them.
  • Volume and media keys may change the volume instead of showing here.

A key stays amber

The computer still thinks the key is down. If you are not pressing it, the key may be stuck. Turn the keyboard off or unplug it, then gently clean around the key. If it still sticks, the switch may need repair.

Two keys pressed together, but one does not show

Many keyboards can only report certain combinations of keys at once. Some USB keyboards report at most six regular keys at a time. Gaming keyboards often support more. Try the same keys in a different order to see which combination fails.

Keys respond slowly or skip quick presses

  • Windows: Filter Keys can ignore brief or repeated presses. Open Settings, then Accessibility, then Keyboard, and turn off Filter Keys.
  • Mac: Slow Keys adds a delay. Open System Settings, then Accessibility, then Keyboard, and turn off Slow Keys.

I am on a phone or tablet

On-screen keyboards do not report physical keys. Connect a Bluetooth or USB keyboard and the test works the same way.
