How to read your result
The table lists the five buttons a mouse can report: left, middle (pressing the wheel), right, back and forward. Most mice only have the first three.
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Not tested | No press seen yet. |
| Pressed | The button is down right now. |
| Working | The button was pressed at least once. |
| Fast repeats | The same button registered two presses less than 80 ms apart. |
Fast repeats are the sign of switch chatter: a worn switch that bounces, so one click turns into a double click or a drag drops halfway. Clicking twice that fast on purpose is very hard, so the test flags it. Click slowly, one click at a time, for a minute. If fast repeats still appear, the switch is likely the cause.
Double click shows the time between your last two left clicks, when they came less than 500 ms apart. Windows uses 500 ms as its standard double-click time. You can change it in your mouse settings.
Wheel up and Wheel down count scroll steps over the test area. Touchpads and smooth-scrolling wheels send many small steps, so these numbers can rise quickly.
Inside the test area, the right-click menu is blocked and the back and forward buttons do not leave the page. Everywhere else they work as usual.
Troubleshooting
My mouse double clicks when I click once
- Single click slowly in the test area. If the table shows Fast repeats, the switch is bouncing.
- Blow out dust around the button and try again.
- Try another USB port or a fresh battery. For wireless mice, move the receiver closer.
- If it keeps happening, note the button and the gap in milliseconds. It helps with a warranty claim.
Back and forward do not show up
- Software from your mouse maker can reassign the side buttons. Check that they are set to back and forward.
- Some browsers and systems handle the side buttons themselves before the page sees them. Try another browser.
Middle click or the wheel does not register
- Press the wheel straight down without rolling it.
- On a touchpad, middle click depends on your touchpad settings.
- Mac: if up and down are reversed, that is Natural scrolling. Change it in System Settings, then Mouse.
Right-click opens a menu
The menu is blocked only inside the test area. Move the pointer into the box first.
Laptop touchpad or phone
A tap counts as a left click. On a touchpad, a two-finger tap or the bottom-right corner usually counts as a right click, depending on your settings. Phones only have the left click.
